DIY: Men’s to Women’s Shirt

I went shopping today, and all the styles and colors and patterns that I was looking for kept showing up in the men’s section of stores. So I went for it and bought a men’s shirt. This project was great motivation to get me excited about sewing again. After shortening the hem, taking in the back with some darts, and tacking down rolled up sleeves, I turned this baggy men’s shirt into a nice, fitted women’s shirt.

Rituals. The things that make my days (weeks and years) uniquely alike.

Disclaimer: I purposely did not retouch these photos as much as I could have in order to preserve the authenticity of the moment.

Provo Fashion Week Recap

I did it! Provo Fashion Week has been conquered.

It was quite the experience. I have grand plans in my head of writing a series of very detailed posts about the whole ordeal, from start to finish, but we will see if I ever have time to make that come to fruition. For now, a brief recap and some pictures will suffice.

For those of you who don’t know, I designed and sewed six full outfits (accessories included) for a local fashion show. That’s the summarized version. haha.

Before the models came out on the runway, the audience heard the intro to Circle of Life, which automatically triggered a feeling of anticipation. As the music transitioned into Shakira’s Waka Waka (This Time for Africa), these two heartthrobs walked out.

Notice the reactions of the people in the audience. I was the only designer who had children models, and they definitely stole the show.

They didn’t want to hold hands at first, but they secretly loved it.

Funny story. Those shorts were made for me, a 20-year-old girl. He is a 10-year-old boy. Also, he rolled his eyes the whole time on the runway. haha.

My favorite ensemble in my collection.

This one doesn’t have anything to do with Africa, but I really wanted to make a tulle skirt.

And that is my collection!

Gray Maxi

I love this skirt because it is a classy maxi. It has a subtle sheen to it that makes me feel feminine without going over the top.

Pano Skirt

This pencil skirt is made out of fabric straight from Africa. Props to my brother for bringing home the best kind of souvenir.

Elsa Skirt

Am I the only one who has a perpetual list of things I want in my wardrobe someday? Well two of those things on that list for me were a hi-low skirt and a blue ombré dress or skirt. When I found this fabric over the summer, I knew exactly what to make out of it! I like to call it my Elsa skirt, for obvious reasons.

Thank you to Francis Photography for the fun shoot!

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good…

I never knew that I could get a sewing injury until I got one.

Two days before I went to Florida for Christmas break, I was sewing an elephant sweatshirt, and the needle on my machine went through my finger!

Thankfully it sounds worse than it actually was. This tragic event has not deterred me from sewing.

In other news, I made a mood board/inspiration board for Provo Fashion Week. I don’t know if you can tell from these pictures or not, but I am going with a minimalistic, African theme.

And I just finished sewing a shirt! The first one I have ever made.

I’m going to be a designer for Provo Fashion Week!

What is Provo Fashion Week, you ask? You can read all about it here: http://www.provofashionweek.com/

Basically, I will be designing and sewing 6 outfits (at least) from top to bottom that will be on models on a runway. I will be in the Up-and-Coming Designer show on February 27th at the Provo City Library. I have never done anything like this before, but it is going to be awesome!

If you are interested in seeing some of my previous work, check out the fashion tab on this blog. 🙂
